Organic Animal Farming and Animal Welfare Issues
There are both human health and animal welfare issues attached to conventionally raised livestock. If we choose to eat animal products it is important that we choose organic.
The main issues for organic livestock production are: animal welfare,
inclusion and contamination with antibiotics, growth hormones or promotors, GMOs, and other chemicals. Not only are antibiotics typically added to conventional livestock feed, this feed also contains pesticides used in growing the feed. These pesticides, antibiotics and other drugs that livestock are exposed to during their lives can become incorporated into their tissues, especially their fat.
Conventional livestock production uses feeds that are not a natural part of the animal's diet, eg corn for cows, or soybeans for poultry. At the same time, these animals have limited or no access to the foods they are naturally adapted to eat.
